3 Steps For Updating the Gender on Your Passport
1. Apply For a Passport Book and Choose “Routine Service”
The first step you will need to take to update the gender on your passport is to apply for a passport at an in-person acceptance agency or fill out a printable application and send it in by mail. As of June 11, 2023, you must select “routine service” to update the gender on your passport. You cannot choose to expedite the application process if you want to update the gender on your passport.
2. Select Your Gender Marker
You will now need to select the gender marker that you would like on your passport. As of June 11, 2023, you can choose from the following gender markers:
- Male (M)
- Female (F)
- Unspecified
- Another Gender Identity (X)
Again, it’s important to note that in order to update the gender on your passport, you have to select “routine service,” and you must apply for a U.S. passport book.
3. Receive Your Updated Passport
Once you have applied for your passport and selected your desired gender marker, you will need to wait for your new passport to be processed. As of June 11, 2023, routine service is taking anywhere from 10-13 weeks, so you can expect to receive your passport anywhere within this timeframe. Once your passport has been processed, you will have it sent directly to you in the mail. If you want to check your passport’s status, please visit the U.S. Department of State website.
