The view from when we were stranded!
It’s hard to pick a favorite trip, but one of my most favorite trips was a trip to South Caicos, one of the smaller, less populated islands in the Turks and Caicos. We took a small hopper plane to get there, and our seatmates were some rather jolly convicts who were chained together (they were being moved to another island that had a jail). That should have been our first clue that we were in for a huge adventure. The whole trip was a comedy of errors, and we had such a great time meeting the locals and exploring the island.
We left the island on a boat that ran out of gas in the middle of the ocean. We had nowhere to be, and the flats where we were stranded were stunning. We were eventually rescued and transported to a conch festival on a different island, where we ate conch and drank rum for the rest of the night. The best trips are the ones with the kind of adventures that you can’t possibly plan!

The rainbow that we first noticed while visiting the Orkney Islands in Scotland!
New Year’s 2013, Laurie and I went on one of the most memorable adventures to the Orkney Islands in Scotland. My mom’s family is from these remote islands off the northern tip of Scotland, which made the trip even more amazing. We had a short time to visit there with minimal daylight to explore the islands due to the time of year and how far north the islands are. The day that we had was the first day in over 90 days that the sun had peaked through the clouds… everyone we encountered made sure to make us aware of that.
As we drove around and explored, there was a rainbow that we saw the entire day and is the backdrop of so many of the pictures we have! We spent the most time at the Ring of Brodgar, which is a Neolithic monument (similar and older than Stonehenge) dating back over 5,000 years. We were drawn to spend many hours of our limited window of daylight here.

My mother and I had just attended the Chicago Bears Super Bowl in New Orleans on her birthday, January 26, 1985. When we got back, I received information that the Bears were going to play the Minnesota Vikings in Gothenburg, Sweden. We flew on the plane with the Bears, and my mother went from seat to seat, talking to Bears players. We took a side trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, where we bought silver jewelry from Georj Jenson and headphones from Bang and Olufsen, both appointed by the Royal Danish Court. We experienced jazz next to Tivoli Gardens and ate a genuine smorgasbord lunch. Everyone in Sweden and Denmark couldn’t have been nicer. Trip of a lifetime!

One of my best trips was a week-long visit to LA that I wished had been longer. I met a few aspiring artists, musicians, and actors who were very passionate about their craft. I got the chance to see why people called LA “The City of Dreamers.” Almost everyone I met said they moved to LA because of the endless opportunities in the city.
One of my favorite things about my visit was my trip to LA’s historical landmark, the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A funny moment was when I thought the Hollywood star for the actor Mike Meyers was for the character Michael Myers, who plays the villain in one of my favorite movies – Halloween. When I noticed the star, I said out loud, “Wow, they gave Michael Myers from Halloween a star!”. A 10-year boy dressed like a pirate laughed and said, “No that’s not Michael Myers, that’s Mike Meyers who says yeahhhh babbbbbyyy.” Oh, the laughs I had there. Take me back! LOL

One of the fondest trips I took was when I went to India in 2017 to visit my roommate I had met during an exchange in Paris during University. Being interested in India’s fascinating culture and wanting to recreate the crazy memories I made with my roommate during our time in Paris, I made my way to India and traveled with her around the country. From long road trips on India’s crazy adrenaline-rushing highways to trying all sorts of local cuisine, visiting her temple, and interacting with the locals she introduced me to as well as other travelers we met while hopping around at different hostels, it was truly a memorable trip. Hopefully, one day I can return to explore more of this beautiful country!

My favorite trip was to Jamaica. This was my first time out of the country, so I was nervous and cautious. Once we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with Rum Punch, which helped settle my nerves. Everyone we encountered had amazing energy and good vibes. Some of the things I really enjoyed were sunrise walks on the beach, the delicious breakfast, the crystal-clear waters, and the white sandy beaches. I had an amazing time. I wish I could have stayed longer.

One of my all-time favorite trips was to Boston. I’ve always been obsessed with history, and this is the perfect place to get your fill of historical sites. My brother and I spent our days walking (up to 13 miles some days) because Boston is a very walkable city. I think my favorite moment was when we took a tour through Boston Commons. During the way, our guide (decked out in historically accurate clothes) would point out old government buildings, gravestones of people like Paul Revere, and then she randomly pointed to an area with shops and exclaimed, “and here we have ye old Chipotle!” Boston is a perfect blend of old and new.

Recently, I went to Italy with my family, and it was an incredible experience. We started in Florence and saw the Florence Cathedral, sampled some delicious gelato, and spent the day exploring the city. We also had the privilege of visiting a beautiful family-run winery in Tuscany and got to sample multiple different wines. Next, we made our way to Rome and toured the Colosseum and the Vatican, and had the best carbonara. Finally, we made our way to Sorrento, where we ate seafood almost every night and took part in a relaxing boat tour of Sorrento and Capri. Italy is one of my favorite places in the entire world, and I cannot wait to go back one day!
Although there are so many incredible places to visit in the world, everyone has that one trip that they wish they could relive over and over again.
