The time has finally arrived! The Henley Passport Index was released earlier this month and provided some insight into the most powerful passports to have in 2022. This list is created and updated quarterly to provide insight into which passports have the highest global mobility score. The higher the score, the more freedom of mobility a person has with that specific passport. So, what passports made the top of the list, where did your country rank, and what does having a “powerful” passport mean? Read on to find out more:
What is the Henley Passport Index?
Since 2006, the Henley Passport Index has provided insight into the world’s most powerful passports. The index is based on data from the International Air Transport Authority. The rankings are based on how many destinations people can travel to without needing a visa. The index takes into account 199 passports and 227 travel destinations, and the rankings are updated quarterly. This year, the highest global mobility score was 192, and the lowest was 26.
What is a Global Mobility Score?
The Henley Passport Index is created to show which passports have the highest global mobility score. The higher the score, the more freedom of mobility a person has with that specific passport. For example, if a passport has a global mobility score of 192, people who hold that passport can visit 192 destinations without having to obtain a visa beforehand. But if a passport has a global mobility score of 26, a person holding that passport can only travel to 26 destinations without obtaining a visa ahead of time.
What Passport Ranked First?
For the second year in a row, two passports tied for the top of the Henley Passport Index. In 2021, Japan and Singapore tied for the most powerful passport globally, and the two countries tied again at number one in 2022. Both countries scored a 192 access score this year, meaning people who hold these passports can travel to 192 different destinations without obtaining a passport ahead of time.
