Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a passport online?
Yes, you can get a Chicago passport application online; however, the application itself must be submitted in-person to either the local post office or a passport expediting office. If you visit the U.S. Department of State website, you can access the application. From there, simply print the form and fill it in by hand. You can also use the Passport Application Wizard to fill out the form online and then print the finished version. Bring the completed version to either a post office or Chicago passport expediting office to be signed in front of a passport designated official.
Can I get a passport at the post office in Chicago?
Yes. You can either print the application from the U.S. Department of State website or obtain the application at the local post office. You must complete the application and bring the required information and identification there, where you will be required to sign the application in front of a passport designated official. Once you complete and sign the paperwork and submit it at the post office, it will be forwarded for processing.
Please note: The post office does not issue or create your passport for you. Instead, your passport will be mailed to you from the U.S. Department of State.
Please note that you will be asked to pay two separate fees when utilizing the Post Office for passport services. You will pay an application fee to the Department of State and an acceptance fee paid directly to the U.S. Postal Service.
What is the current passport renewal fee?
Passport renewal in Chicago varies based on processing time and the type of passport you need. You must renew by mail and can only pursue passport renewal in Chicago if you have an adult passport (16 years of age or older) with 10-year validity and it is less than 5 years expired (and undamaged). Expedited passports do include an additional $60 Government fee.Â
